Yes I know I’ll get no sympathy – but carrying around a heavy medium format camera, lenses and tripod in high heat and high humidity is no fun. On the other hand the reward for trekking out in to some of the islands famous 365 beaches is obvious. It’s not hard to find coves and bays that will literally take your breath away. Despite the terrible storms which came just a few weeks after my time here the Island remains one of the Caribbean’s jewels.
By using polarizer and graduated ND filters I was able to capture the beautiful deep blue of the sky and yet retain the detail in the sand and rocks of the shore. High brightness and contrast scenes like this demand your attention as a photographer, and it’s easy to loose concentration in the heat. Our fixer, Skene Howie from Caribbean Crews, was 4th generation Antiguan and was invaluable in getting us to some amazing locations – especially the spectacular long disused sugar mill. You really can see nature reclaiming the space…
